Paramedic here…..I was transporting/treating at drunk 20 something who nailed a big tree. He was messed up pretty bad and drunk as hell. I asked him where he had been partying, to which he told me. I asked how was the crowd? He muttered, “So many hot bitches.” He went unconscious, vitals tanked, and he died.

On her deathbed, my Yugoslav grandmother was hopped up on morphine to ease her pain. My dad and I were the only people in the room. She told us that when she was in the concentration camp, she and her sister were gang-raped by a group of Nazis while they were digging out in the forest. She said that they pushed her and her sister down into the hole and raped them for an hour or two. She was just kind of staring into the middle distance as she said it, so I don’t even know if she knew that we were there. She ended her story by saying that she wound up pregnant and had to abort in the camp. She closed her eyes and slumped.

I actually thought she had died right then and there, but she woke a few moments later and asked if my dad had turned in her absentee ballot (this was during the 2000 election). Classic Baba.

I was with my mother when she died. She was an abusive parent who did all sorts of nasty things to everyone around her, especially we 3 kids. In the end I was the only one who came to her when she was dying so she wouldn’t die alone.

She said to me, “I wrecked your life.” I said “What? no. You made me the person I am today. Aren’t you proud of who I am?” she nodded her head yes.

It wasn’t the very last thing she said. The last thing she said was crying out for my brother who never showed up until the funeral. I’ve never told anyone that part.
