A Reminder That No Matter What, Everything Is Going To Be Fine

By

We all have days where smacking our heads repeatedly against a shit covered wall seems dreamy compared to how we’re feeling.

Sometimes you just want to throw those perfectly manicured middle fingers into the sky and give it a big “F YOU.”

But guess what? No matter what you’re going through, everything is going to be fine. I know because I just popped a chocolate mochi in my mouth and I’m already feeling better after a hell-on-wheels kind of day. *woooooo sahhhhh*

When something takes a proverbial bite of your mood, it can be hard to hold it together in front of colleagues, friends, and even in front of clients. Allow me to let you in on a little secret: it’s hard to hold emotions back because you’re physically not meant to.

Keeping something irritating buried deep in the pit of your stomach is like making a conscious choice to jump into a bed of rose thorns, praying you don’t bleed out. So why do we do it?

The best part about a shitty day is that you have the power to turn it into a less shitty one. One you can look back on and laugh at. Maybe even tease yourself for how awkwardly ruffled you got when your boss asked you to resend an e-mail. It all starts with a pretty serving of self-talk. Here are the keys to turning that frown upside down:

1. Literally stop what you’re doing, close your eyes and ask yourself this question. “Will this issue impact me in 5 days, 5 months or 5 years?” If the answer is NO, take a deep breath and move onto something that actually matters. Because even though the problem at hand might seem big in the moment, it’s minuscule in the big picture.

2. Think about what you can learn from your situation. Remember the awesome cliches your middle school guidance counselor preached relentlessly? Yeah, I’m talking about the, “out of every negative comes a positive” and “look for the silver lining” type phrases. They’re the only cliches I actually support because even though they may be overused, they’re definitely underrated. If you make a real effort to find positivity in every experience, you will – and you’ll be a better person because of it. It’s called perseverance.

3. Go to your happy place. Environment dictates everything. Put yourself in a place that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, and take a moment to clear your head. Let’s be real, it’s tough to be in a nasty mood when you’re sitting on the beach with a blueberry mojito in hand. Allow yourself to take up space if you need it, time if you want it, and silence if you crave it.

4. Tell yourself everything is going to be fine. I promise, it will be.

The next time you’re struggling with something I hope you’ll replay these words in your head. In the meantime, an episode of Game of Thrones and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s never hurts.

Don’t waste another minute being anything other than perfectly imperfect.
