Read This If You Feel Like You Have No Idea What You’re Doing In Life

You’re at work.

Maybe you’re sitting at your desk, looking at your computer screen and never-ending inbox as your eyes start to glaze over. Perhaps you’re just watching the clock, counting the seconds until you can leave. Maybe you’re eyeball-deep in work, and stressing out about how you’re going to get to pick up your kid and see your spouse and have a healthy dinner all by a reasonable hour.

Maybe your work doesn’t involve a desk. Perhaps it’s something different. Maybe you’re home, with your kids, trying to figure out how to juggle feeding you and your child and tackling the mountain of laundry that’s taunting you from the corner, and find time to, I don’t know, wash your hair.

Maybe your version of work doesn’t look like either of those situations. Maybe you’re a freelancer, and perhaps you travel, and you’re one of those people who has the most fabulous Instagram feed, the kind that stirs up jealousy in everyone who stumbles across it. You look like you’re doing amazing things. And you look like you’re happy. And you look like you’re the embodiment of #goals.

Maybe your life is something else entirely.

But here’s the thing I wish we all understood; here’s the secret I want us to shout from the rooftops: none of us have this thing called life figured out completely.

Even those of us who have steady jobs.

Even those of us who have beautiful families.

Even those of us who have a life brimming with adventure.

There are times, and they happen more often than not, where bewilderment creeps in, and you start to feel the chaos take hold, and you begin to listen to the little whisper that says, You have no idea what you’re doing. You have no idea how to make this work. You have no idea how to juggle it all. You have no idea where to go from here.

It’s a crappy little voice that takes up permanent residence in your brain if you’re not careful.

It can stay there and keep you second-guessing your actions throughout the day. It can keep you up at night and keep you feeling like you’re the only one in this world who is just…lost.

But here’s the secret: You’re not.

I don’t care how much success one human has. At one point or another, they have been there. They have doubted. They have disbelieved in their own skills, and abilities, and capabilities. They have come head to head with the voice that says, “You have no idea what you’re doing.”

And then they have silenced that voice.

They silenced that voice by asking for help when they needed it.

They silenced that voice by admitting to a lack of knowledge within themselves so that they were able to learn and grow in a way that helped them move forward.

It’s okay not to know everything at every moment.

Nobody knows everything at every moment.

Nobody.

So when that voice comes creeping in, telling you to doubt everything and everyone around you, take a breath.

Close your eyes.

Remember that you’re not the only one who doesn’t always have it all figured out—I promise you, you’re not alone in your doubt.

Remember that there’s nothing wrong with asking for help.

Remember that you have it in you to figure it out—you have to give yourself a minute to figure it out.

Remember to give yourself the grace to learn.
