What It Feels Like to Love Someone Who Loves You Back

By

The first summer I met you, life was like a country song.

You were the easy-going, beer drinking, back roads driving, carefree fresh breeze I was looking for but didn’t even know it.

Everything that had felt so complicated before felt so easy with you. My heart was pounding, and I was tongue-tied but it felt so right, riding alongside you. I couldn’t wait to see what else we could do, what else we could be and what other adventures you would take me on.

I was happy.

Being with someone who I loved, who loved me back was new to me. I was used to the endless pursuit of people I couldn’t have, people who didn’t want me. I was used to the one-night stands, the no texts back, the unwanted and the lonely.

The attention from you felt refreshing, but also unreal.

It felt like at any moment you could choose to leave me, to drive away down those winding roads and not look back.

But then all of a sudden, it didn’t.

I grew confident in knowing you wanted me like I wanted you- unconditionally, and all the time. This wasn’t just a summer fling. As the leaves changed, you were still there. As the snow fell, you were still there.

From season to season, you proved that you were mine.

Being with someone you love, who loves you back is the most wonderful feeling in the world. It’s your favorite song coming on the radio, just at the right time. It’s the windows down on a beautiful summer day. It’s that first revitalizing sip of coffee in the morning. It’s warmth, security, and confidence. It’s being able to be yourself without any abandon, all the time in their presence.

The first summer I met you, life was like a country song—
a song I never want to end.
