Forget The Way It’s Supposed To Be

By

Forget
the nine-to-five
the deadlines
the rush rush rush
just to end where you started.
Forget
how love was ‘meant’ to feel
like a fairytale
like hands on a body,
temporary
unfulfilled.
Forget
having to be a housewife,
knives neatly aligned in the kitchen,
dinner on the table,
a single glass of wine next to your plate
or a husband
who works so late he only sees his children
an hour before they go to bed.
Forget
being ‘right.’
Forget
expectations.
Forget
stability
and the way you’ve been told
to follow a certain path
or else you won’t find
success
love
joy
Have they found it?
In their perfect houses?
In their empty faces?
In the monotony
of following all the rules?

Forget
rules.
Dance barefoot in the kitchen.
Sip wine until your lips buzz
and your brain spins.
Laugh too loudly.
Eat all the food on your plate
and ask for seconds.
Leave the job you hate.
Pour your heart
into something other than a body.
But if you fall in love
fall headfirst
like diving into a pool
with the fearlessness of a child
who never learned there are things to be afraid of.
Forget
fear
just stand on the edge
of all that you wish for
and jump.
Forget
safe
because safe is a life that never moves.
Forget
all the doubt that’s kept you up at night
because doubt is the conscience’s defense
and your life
is worth going to battle for.
Forget
all the ‘shoulds’
the maybes
and the foolish ghosts of your past.
Forget
the way it’s ‘supposed’ to be.
Forget
not living
your f*cking life.
