You Are An Ordinary Person, Capable Of Extraordinary Things

God & Man

You are an ordinary person. You wake up in the morning and brush your hair. Perhaps you get ready for work or school. Maybe you have children to take care of, or a significant other to share the bathroom mirror with. Maybe you walk down the block to run some errands. Maybe you catch a bus. Maybe you sit in traffic for an hour, sipping coffee and listening to talk radio to find out the latest happenings. Maybe you do the same thing every morning, your own little routine.

Some days, you’re perfectly happy with the way things are. But some days you feel ho-hum, like you’re just stuck in this monotonous pattern, this regular existence. Yes, you know you’re lucky. Yes, you know you’re blessed. Yes, you know you are unique. No one else has that little freckle on their left cheek or that deep crease along their palm. No one else’s voice has the same intonation, or the same speck of color in their eye. You know you are different, are special, are significant, but in the big scheme of this world, you feel so very ordinary.

You cannot fly or perform miracles. You cannot save the world, or speak with a voice loud enough to spur thousands of people to greatness. You are not a god(ess) or a superhero, not perfect nor strong enough to lift ten million pounds.

You are ordinary person going about ordinary things, and sometimes you wonder if there’s even a point. Sometimes you wonder what your purpose is.

But here’s the truth: You were meant for extraordinary things.

You may be just one tiny person, one little dot, one little crumb-sized creature but you matter. You were meant to laugh and kiss and fall in love. You were meant to learn and grow and discover new things. You were meant to chase dreams and tell stories and write your name on a page of thoughts and claim it as your own.

You were meant to talk to the people around you, to develop and express perspectives that could shape others in powerful ways. You were meant to share God’s word, loving and healing and bringing people together in His name. You were meant to achieve, and stumble, and find your footing again.

You were meant to squeeze every drop from this life and live loudly while you’re here.

Some days you fall into patterns. You eat at the same time every single day, you take the same bus, sit in the same cubicle, watch the same sunsets. But you were not meant to live your life as if it’s on repeat, scratching the same notes over and over again to the point they lose their melody. You were not meant to tread the same path, day by day until your legs get numb. You were not meant to see the beautiful things of this world as every day, lacking meaning and beauty. You were not meant to fall into a way of living that exists rather than lives.

You were meant for more.

You were meant for engaging with others, meant for learning truths, meant for relationships and connections and triumphs and failures that you can grow from. You were meant to ride roller coasters and sing at the top of your lungs. You were meant to laugh with children, fall asleep under the stars, dance in the sun, and celebrate the little things, simply because you are happy to be alive.

You were not meant to feel as if this life is ordinary, as if, somehow, you are less than brilliant.

The truth is, God has carved a path for each and every one of us. And this path is distinct, and special, and ours. He has made a way for us—to shine, to share ourselves, to reflect His light right back—and this is far from ordinary.

Some days it feels like you’re just doing the same thing, just going to the same job or talking to the same people or cooking the same dinners or staring at the same four walls of your apartment. But God intended for you to have more, be more. And this will be shown to you in time.

Maybe the coworker you see every day needs a prayer. Maybe that moment at the stop sign where you handed the homeless man a few extra coins actually changed his life. Maybe the job you have and hate is making you resilient and prepared for the future career you’re destined for. Maybe His plan will be revealed on His terms rather than yours.

Maybe if you open yourself to the possibility of the extraordinary, you’ll see how God wants to use your ordinary being for something far greater than you ever thought possible.

Maybe you just have to let go, trust, and keep smiling, even through those long, tiresome days.

In the big scheme of things, you are ordinary. You are a beating heart, legs, eyes, and hands that shuffle through the days, trying to find meaning. Some days you feel important. Some days you feel like you don’t even matter. But you do matter.

And God wants to do big things with that little soul of yours. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
