I Only Want You When It Rains

I hear the rain on the roof and it reminds me of being a little kid, tucked between blankets on the living room sofa, watching the droplets slide down the windows.

It reminds me of Saturday afternoons, sloshing through puddles, discovering a sort of solace in the quiet, empty streets.

I’ve always associated rain with comfort.

A gentle shower right outside the window makes me want to crawl into baggy sweatshirts and fuzzy socks, makes me want to pull a loved one close, makes me want to close my eyes and listen to the steady rhythm pitter-patter on the roof.

I want you when it rains.

I like the way the air feels, thick and soothing. I like the way my body feels sleepy, relaxed. And deep breathing seems effortless.

I want you when the sky is dark and the wind picks up, just enough to make a heart skip. I want you when the windows are cracked slightly, so we can hear the water hit the concrete, a sound of peace and earth and life.

I only want you when it rains because things are tender when it rains.

The flowers tuck their petals to keep them from breaking, the animals crawl into their holes, the birds step gingerly onto branches to shake their wings in the falling water.

The world seems cautious at first, reaching out fingertips for the droplets to melt on. Then abandonment—outstretched tongues, heads tilted to the sky.

I want you when it rains because I like the way the water feels on my bare skin. Because the water makes me feel natural, real, alive.

Because I can see us intertwined on the couch, talking to the rhythm of the water, no destination or place to be besides in one another’s arms.

Because I can imagine us standing under the rainfall, kissing the droplets onto one another’s lips.

I only want you in the rain because rain slows the world down.
Because rain makes us see ourselves, refreshed and new.

I want you when the earth is silent, because then I can hear your thoughts, scope your beautiful mind, understand the depths of your heart as I listen to nature’s song outside my window.

Because the rain makes me unafraid, and I love to listen to it, to feel it in every kiss and moment I share with you.

Because I want to experience you in all the places I love the most, snuggling on a couch, watching droplets slide down the windows. The backdrop to our love story.
