Being in a relationship has its perks as well as disadvantages. However, most people only remember the perks when it’s all over and done. They romanticize the past now that their significant other is gone. Such habits can make it difficult for them to see the reasons why the person who once meant the world to them is not “The One.“ And this makes starting over again cumbersome.
But, life is how you make it. You have more control over your life than you think. You can fall in love again. You probably won’t love the same way again, but if you learned your lessons, replaced the bad habits with good ones and avoid repeating the same mistakes, you can have a better relationship with someone better.

1. Do the interesting things you’ve always wanted to do
If you are young and single, then this is the time of your life, because you can do so much more in life when you are single.
Do the things you’ve always wanted to do, including the activities you were putting off when you were still in a relationship.
If you’ve always wanted to learn how to dance salsa, but couldn’t then, well, now you can.
If you’ve always wanted to move to another city, but couldn’t then because you wanted to stay with your former significant other, now is your chance to pack your bags and live the life you’ve always imagined in the city where you’ve always wanted to live in.
Remember what Mark Twain once said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Traveling is an adventure, whether you travel with friends or alone. It makes one’s life more interesting. You get to have new experiences for all your five senses, new compelling stories to tell and affairs to remember.
You also get to meet new characters, discover different cuisines and learn more about different cultures and worldviews.
Traveling is good for the soul.
3. Work toward your career goals and make a name for yourself
Now that you are single again, you can make more time for yourself. Develop your skills and network with the people who can help you get the opportunities you need.
Make a name for yourself in the industry or in your community by contributing or by making a positive impact.
If you are still in school, start working toward your career goals by applying for internships or by getting a part-time job that can serve as a stepping-stone to your dream job.
Having a job that you are proud of can help you boost your self-esteem.
If you are a healthy 20-something person who doesn’t have a child to take care of, then you’re the only one who can stop yourself from getting the career you want.
4. Invest in your body
Some people cease taking care of themselves once they reach the “comfortable” stage of the relationship. Others embark on unhealthy lifestyle and develop bad habits, such as binge drinking, overeating and overworking after a bad break up.
Your body is the temple of your soul. Keep it clean. Your body is what enables you to do fun activities, so take care of it by exercising regularly and by nurturing it well.
Exercising regularly is also a must if you want to improve your life, because it can boost your self-esteem, improve your sleep, increase your energy, make you stronger and help you get fit.
To make your life better, you also need to treat yourself better.
5. Invest on your mind and well-being
Learn new skills and improve the ones you have, you will be more valuable in the job market and to society.
Learn to play the sports or the music instruments you are interested in, you might discover a new hobby.
Read the books you’ve been meaning to read, reading is good for your mind and vocabulary.
Stay informed about current events to make better decisions about future investments.
Read informative and motivational articles to improve your self.
Do things that can relax your mind and think positively.
And last but not least, learn continuously, because smart is the new sexy.
