When Politics Make You Feel Too Much

By

I feel so much. Sometimes it feels like I feel too much. Today is one of those days.

I feel worried for my relative who has a daughter with special needs, that she will be devastated by the effects of the repeal of the ACA with no plan for replacement. She genuinely will have to figure out how to afford to keep her daughter alive. This leaves me speechless.

I feel brokenhearted for my friend that has a transgender son. Today he was basically told his humanity is not valued by the President of the United States. We don’t want your service, kid. Sorry. If someday you decide you’d like to volunteer to possibly give your life to fight for this country, we don’t want it. How is this a thing that’s happening in 2017?

I feel overwhelmed with all these feelings. I thank God that my daughter isn’t old enough to comprehend what is currently going on in this country. Hopefully, by the time she is, things have changed.

My husband and I have sat, many a dinner, and discussed how ridiculous our current political climate is. He’s long voted Republican but didn’t in the last election and I have voted for both parties but am now a proud, card-carrying democrat.

The tweeting. I can’t with the tweeting.

We have to be better than this. We have to teach our children better than this. We have to teach them to care. While my feels may get the best of me sometimes, they are what makes me a good mother, a good friend, and a good wife. I feel and I care.

I care too much to stand by and allow this to happen. We cannot be silent. We are all a part of this human family. I implore you to take a stand and give a shit about your fellow human beings before it’s too late. Someday, it could be you on the other side of the discrimination. Be an ally. Stand up for your fellow humans in their time of crisis. Even if your day never comes, where you’re the one being discriminated against, you can die someday knowing that you’ve done the right thing.

Whether you’re Democrat, Republican, Independent, or couldn’t care less about politics, one thing you are totally capable of being is kind.

Feel. Care. Speak up. It could save someone’s life.
