The best thing about spring, aside from warmer weather and the looming promise of girls and boys parading around in short shorts, is that from now to the foreseeable future every musician on the earth is dropping new stuff — including Fantasia !!! That’s because April is a huge music month. Record Store Day is Saturday, April 20th and music festival culture starts in earnest right now — Coachella pops off next weekend where 85,000 hot young people will be not behaving themselves in the desert, all of this set to the soundtrack of some of the most exciting acts in music.
Here are a few of the records you definitely need to look for this month.
Tyler, The Creator, Wolf
Some think Tyler is a raging homophobe, but he’s not even though he sure says faggot a lot! “I’m not homophobic. I just say faggot and use gay as an adjective to describe stupid shit,” the LA-born rapper told The Guardian. Doesn’t this sound familiar! He does use the word faggot a lot in his music and on Twitter, but apparently Frank Ocean isn’t too bothered by it, since he appears in guest spot on Tyler’s new LP. Other guest spots by Pharrell and Erykah Badu. Drop Date: Today.
Save Rock And Roll, Fall Out Boy
Since Folie à Deux from 2008 and the announcement of a hiatus in 2009, Fall Out Boy is back with their fifth record, The Phoenix. EVERYBODY PUT YOUR BLACK MASCARA ON. While we wait on this very important record to drop, enjoy Pete Wentz’ fabulous dick pic! Drop Date: April 16th.
Here’s “Slyd,” the lead single from !!!’s fifth record THR!!!ER. It’s kind of funky, and one thing you can tell about the band is that they don’t really like vowels that much, do they? Drop Date: April 29/30.
Mosquito, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
It’s going to be epic. Plus there’s a song about mosquitos on it. I can’t wait. YYY plays Webster Hall in NYC this Sunday. Drop Date: April 16th.
Overgrown, James Blake
No album excites me more than this one. I was listening to his epic “Retrograde,” which I actually listen to like 10 times every day, and it finally hit me. Blake’s sophomore record is called Overgrown probably because dude is SIX FOOT FIVE. So hot. Drop Date: April 9th.
Free the Universe, Major Lazer
Diplo-produced musical project featuring guest spots from basically everybody — Wyclef Jean, Amber from the Dirty Projectors, Bruno Mars, Santigold, Tyga and Wynter Gordon. Drop Date: April 19th.
Shaking The Habitual, The Knife
Maybe too art school for a lot of people, but it’s their first record in seven years. One thing’s for sure — this puppy is going to be LONG. One of the songs clocks in at 19 minutes! Drop Date: April 9th.
