5 Reasons Naomi Campbell Is Everything

By

If you haven’t been watching The Face, what are you doing! It’s a fashion model competition show but it’s so much better than America’s Next Top Model. For one thing, Nigel Barker is the host so now we know the real reason he parted ways with ANTM. Contestants are paired up into teams where they are mentored by legendary models from the fashion industry who are also competing with each other to say that they’ve found “The Face.”

But everybody knows that the people who win these fashion/lifestyle design things don’t really do anything that great in the industry because nobody takes them seriously. The Face tries to change that and the show actually has some real street cred: former Victoria’s Secret angel Karolina Kurkova is a mentor on the show as is the ever fabulous Coco Rocha, probably the most relevant fashion model-judge on reality TV. But the real reason to stop what you’re doing and watch is Naomi Campbell. These other broads might be allowed some camera time but this is really Naomi’s show.

Why? Because:

Her Weaves Are On POINT

I’ve seen a lot of balding photos of Naomi Campbell recently, and if you just Google her name you’ll know what I’m talking about. But — hahaha! — a little baldness can’t stop the queen of the runways from getting the best weave jobs in the world. When I watch her on The Face I’m trying to find any possible example of a track or some glue residue or anything but there is nothing. Even the girl who twists my hair, an expert in weaves, couldn’t tell how she does it. I mean let’s be real. Naomi’s weaves aren’t as good as Beyoncé’s, but they are kind of amazing for someone who is balding!

Her Walk Is Crazy

Nobody works a catwalk like Naomi Campbell. Nobody! It’s so good that Beyoncé even wrote a song about it. Remember that line in “Get Me Bodied”? “Do the Naomi Campbell walk, Naomi Campbell walk/Walk across the room like Naomi Campbell, walk.” This is my mantra especially since I do this walk everyday. (Fast forward to 6:50 to see the walk for yourself).

She Broke A Lot Of Firsts For Black Beauty

Naomi Campbell emerged during the supermodel period of the 1990s and she’s been on the covers of more than 500 fashion magazines. Even though she is arguably the most famous black fashion model ever, she didn’t make as many coins as her white supermodel counterparts and wasn’t even signed to a cosmetics brand until as late as 1999. Naomi wasn’t the first black model to break fashion barriers — those honors go to Pat Cleveland, Beverly Johnson, Bethann Hardison, Donyale Luna and Iman — but in an industry where white models totally eclipse all other people of color, Naomi is a breath of fresh air.

She Has An Album!!!

Yes, it’s a hot mess. Cut her some slack, people. Her debut LP Babywoman dropped in 1995 and everybody hated it. It’s not THAT bad, though (see: Paris Hilton). “I Want to Live” is a fun song, but the album and her career as a singer basically went nowhere. But that’s okay! She still goes to parties on yachts and is friends with Usher Kate Moss and like Nelson Mandela, so.

She Can Throw Some SERIOUS Shade

Naomi is an expert shade-thrower. My favorite part about The Face is whenever Naomi gets mad, which is basically all the time. But the part that left me gasping for air the most was when Coco Rocha says something annoying and Naomi was not having it, not with the shade of lipstick Coco was wearing that day. So Naomi simply shouts — this one is for the books so write it down — “CHECK YOUR LIPSTICK…BEFORE YOU COME AND TALK TO ME.” #Dead.
