You Were Never Mine And I Was Never Yours

You were never mine and I was never yours.

But you touched my hand as if asking permission for it to be held. You curled your fingers around as if never wanting to let go, as if your life depended on it, as if it was the most valuable thing in your dear world.

You were never mine and I was never yours.

But I looked for you in times I needed help. Our time together was short, yes, but in that short time, I felt what it’s like to have someone by my side. I felt what it’s like to be given importance. I felt what it’s like to be loved.

You were never mine and I was never yours.

But you gaze at me and suddenly there were butterflies fluttering around my insides. One look, one touch – that was all it took.

You were never mine and I was never yours.

But we acted like any couple would do. We sat so close to each other, so close that you can easily wrap your arms around my back, and I could lean my head against yours. We lay in bed and I can feel your weight on mine, your soft, almost unfelt breathing and even the rise and fall of your chest.

You were never mine and I was never yours.

But we were together just for a moment. What we had wasn’t built on stable grounds. We were together because we needed to. Whether it is to forget our miserable, failed relationships or maybe just to pass time, we will never know. Our past never mattered because there was no future waiting for us.

You were never mine and I was never yours.

But we had something unspoken, something that is only between us. We never talked about what we were or even what we could have been. We never put a label onto what we had and onto what we were doing. All we knew or maybe all I knew was that it felt good. Having you by my side is always a place I would choose to go to.

You were never mine and I was never yours.

And maybe that’s what we will ever be, because frankly, no one between us has the guts to take it up to the next level. TC mark
