The Two Types Of Best Friends And How To Tell Them Apart

By

We’ve all heard those stories about best friends falling in love, or people wanting to marry their best friends. When I think about my friends and think about who my best friends are, I’ve realized that there’s a distinction between some of those friendships. It made me think, maybe there are two kinds of best friends: the Best Friend and the Bestfriend.

First there’s the Best Friend, where this person is the best friend you have. You may have known this person since you were a child, or you may have developed a strong bond with them over a period of time. This is a person who knows you inside out and accepts you completely. This person loves you unconditionally and will be there for you no matter what, and the same goes for you with them.

Although you love this person, the thought of you being with them doesn’t cross your mind. You know the love you share wouldn’t progress into anything more. Your relationship with this person is completely platonic and you’re practically like siblings.

Then there’s the Bestfriend, who is a person of the opposite sex (or preferred sex) that stands above the rest. This person also knows you inside out, and accepts you, and loves you unconditionally, but your relationship isn’t necessarily platonic. Your love for this person isn’t like your love for your Best Friend. You know that your love for them is strong, but has the potential to reach a different level of intimacy. There’s a part of you that can imagine taking your friendship a step further and can see yourself possibly being with this person in the future. Whether or not you two end up together is a different question, but this person is definitely someone who is distinctly special in your life. You can see yourself one day falling in love with this person.

What the Best Friend and Bestfriend have in common is they both hold distinct places in our lives. They aren’t just any friend to you and they’re the ones who know you best. They’re the ones that you can be your truest self with and the people in your life you’re most comfortable with.

Whether or not someone in your life is your Best Friend of Bestfriend, always let them know how valuable they are to you. Cherish the relationships you have with these people because it’s not everyday you meet someone you can give such a title to. There’s a reason they’re your best friend, and they should know that.
