13. He Threatened To Drink Insecticide
I was 19 years old, and had been dating a guy who was a few years older than I for about three years. I wanted out but was afraid to leave because he was incredibly abusive to me, but didn’t have the support network available to just bolt. He then proposed marriage. I told him we were too young, and that he could ask me when I was 21 if we were still together.
It didn’t go all that well. He tried to drink insecticide in front of me in our bedroom and threatened me with a handgun until I was able to calm him down and assure him that I wasn’t fucking his brother who lived with us.
14. Drama, So Much Drama
Well, it ended the relationship, obviously. He stayed there on one knee, kind of crying but trying hard not to… It was awkward. I didn’t know what to say. So I said “I’m sorry.” and walked back inside and closed the door. The next day he showed up at my karate studio with a bunch of gifts (my birthday was a few weeks away and I assume he had already bought them) and an empty photo album with “Our Wedding Memories” printed on the front cover, which he had crossed out and written “Never to be” in sharpie.
15. Third Time Was The Charm
I turned down two proposals from the same guy.
First time he proposed with a key ring while I was in the kitchen at a house party, taking mozza sticks out of the oven. I laughed and said nope. He said, “You wound me!” Then he grabbed a piece of cheese and went back in the basement to play Xbox.
The second time was when we went out to get burgers around a year later. He pulled an onion ring out of the carton and proposed again. I once again declined, and he cackled and ate the onion ring.
Then some time later, one day I came home from work and as I walked in the door, there he was on one knee. This time he proposed with a ring pop (a candy ring) and I said yes. After he slipped it on my hand, we kissed and he pulled out an actual ring too.
We got married in August, and it’s been wonderful.
