Treating Yourself Is The Most Important Thing You Can Do Today

By

Sitting through a meal alone or going on a day adventure by yourself can be scary, and for most not an option. A couple of years ago, I would have agreed with the majority of people who think going out by yourself is just plain weird. Thankfully, I had a change of heart and discovered how peaceful and liberating it can be to spend some time alone.

Making plans with yourself can be as exciting — if not more as making plans with friends. Think about the last time you stayed home because you had no one to go to that art walk you were dying to see or that concert at the pier. You decided to stay home and catch up on your Netflix shows while secretly regretting your decision to stay home. Don’t get me wrong, a night in enjoying some Netflix is alright by me, but it shouldn’t be your safety net.

The thing is waiting around on others to join you in doing the things you want to do can be well “A Cinderella Story” said it best “useless and disappointing.” I can’t tell you how many things I missed out on because of the fear of having to experience it on my own. The minute I started saying “Fuck It!” was the minute I stopped depriving myself of having so much fun!

For many people something as little as sitting down for a meal alone can be pretty terrifying. I was once amongst those terrified souls, but forcing yourself out of your comfort zone can definitely be rewarding.

Spending some alone time not only forces you to be more independent, but you become more comfortable being in your own skin. Others can often be a distraction from ourselves and can keep us from getting to know ourselves better. The only person who can make you happy is you and what better way to do that than by getting to know yourself.

Sure, you might get the occasional friend who thinks you’re weird for going to a museum by yourself, but what do they know? Trust me, treating yourself to some alone time can be one of the best things you can ever do for yourself.

It will allow you to keep a clear mind. Life can be stressful and sometimes the cure to all your stress and anxiety is spending some alone time. It will give you the ability to recollect your thoughts and go back into the world with a new perspective!

Best of all, doing the things that you love on your own gives you the opportunity to do what you want without having to compromise with another person. It might feel weird at first but give it a chance. I’m sure with time like myself you’ll begin to love and appreciate your alone time.

You’ll get to experience things on a different level and who knows! You might learn new things about yourself. You might just be surprised how much fun you can be. Don’t be afraid to enjoy your own company and treat yourself to a date, you deserve it!
