5 Mystery-Thrillers You’ll Want To Curl Up With This Fall

By

Something about the cool, crisp air of autumn makes it the perfect time to start crossing off all of those mystery novels you left sitting on your bookshelf this past summer. Here’s a list of a few mystery-thrillers that will keep your heart racing and warm you up as the summer comes to an end.

1. 11/22/63 by Stephen King

11/22/63 is a bit of a change from Stephen King’s usual fear-inducing fiction. Based around the assassination of JFK, 11/22/63 diverges from typical historical fiction with the introduction of time-travel along with a deeper, more philosophical conflict between good and evil. The novel was ironically suspenseful, taking an event readers are familiar with and making them wonder if that’s how the story would really end.

2. The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers

Written in 1903, The Riddle of the Sands served as a warning to Britain of their vulnerability from an attack from the North Sea in the years leading up to WWI. It’s an excellent precursor to the spy novel that sucks you in and gets more and more intense as the story unfolds.

3. The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

Classic Erik Larson. The story is twofold as the city of Chicago, in the late 1800’s, begins to prepare to host the World’s Fair. Unaware to the city’s citizens, however, another story is also taking place–the story of the infamous serial killer Dr. H.H. Holmes. Equally haunting and riveting, this book will stay with you for weeks.

4. An End to a Silence by W H Clark

The debut novel of W.H. Clark, An End to a Silence explores the mystery surrounding the strange disappearance of a seven year-old boy in Montana in 1985. This is definitely not a light read, but the twists and turns make the depressing subject matter pay off in the end.

5. The White River Killer: A Mystery Novel by Stephen Wilson

Set in the fictional small town of Hayslip, Arkansas, The White River Killer is a nice take on the traditional conspiracy-thriller. The murder of a local student raises suspicions as it becomes more and more obvious that someone is working to cover it up. With bits of comic relief interspersed throughout the story, the novel will give mystery-lovers the suspense they crave, while also offering up a couple of laughs every now and then.
