What It Really Means To Say ‘I Love You’

By

They say ‘actions speak louder than words’. And in our world today, it’s true. Nowadays, words get overshadowed by actions. Promises get forgotten. Whispers of the future get crumpled up as soon as someone does something to hurt you.

But still, after all this time, I’d like to believe that the word love still holds meaning and still hold a lot of weight. I’d like to believe that it is said truthfully, and without hesitation. I’d like to believe that the word ‘love’ can still make someone’s heart light up like a christmas tree.

I still would like to believe that the word ‘love’, is still the most powerful word in the dictionary.

I find myself constantly saying it, but never truly even thinking about it. “I love that shirt, I love that drink, I love that lipstick”.

But saying the word love to another human being?

That is something special. That is something that is serious. That’s something we should all take seriously. It’s something we should never take for granted either. And it’s something we should never take advantage of.

Saying ‘I love you’ to another human being is not the same thing as saying ‘I like you’ or ‘I have a crush on you’. What I have come to find is that saying ‘I love you’ to someone should be like saying ‘I see a future with you’. It should mean, ‘You are the one I want. You are the one I see at the end of this ride. You are the one I want standing beside me through thick and through thin. And you are the one who is beautiful to me, no matter how ugly you can get.’

This word, the word we all want to have and we all want to say, has been overused and washed out by the media and by our generation. I don’t want us to keep running our mouths, spitting out this four letter word every chance we get. I don’t think that’s the right way to use it.

I want us to truly think about it. I want us all to only say it when we truly feel it. There is so much love that we all have inside of our hearts. There is so much love that we all can give. So give it to someone who you truly want to give it to you. And say it to someone who you truly see yourself being with, until forever. And if someone tells you that they love you, believe them. And treasure the hell out of those words.
