Read This If You’re A 20-Something Who Already Feels Defeated By Love

Sometimes, this world leaves us with nothing to hold on to. We love so hard with every bone in our body and yet, it isn’t enough. Love can be fragile, despite the hundreds of bricks it took for you to build it up with. Love can be unpredictable, regardless of the amount of sticky notes he taped to your heart. And just like the wind, love can leave. And when it leaves, we forget what it’s like to walk, what it’s like to breathe, and we forget what it’s like to hope.

If love has left you feeling impossibly defeated, please hold on to anything that you can. Even if it feels like there is nothing left for you to grab onto, I promise you there is. The funny thing about love is that the more you try to pull away from it, the more it will push back onto you. You just have to be patient.

“There is no remedy for love but to love more.” ~ David Henry Thoreau

If you have just experienced heartbreak, know this now: you are not meant to be with that person. The person you are meant to be with, won’t let you go. They won’t make you feel like you can’t breathe without them, because they won’t ever pull you under. They won’t want to look at any other women in the room, because all they are going to see is you. And sure, you’re going to have to go through obstacles and challenges like everyone does, but this time, the obstacles won’t break you apart. You see, love is not perfect, but, when you find the right one for you, it’ll feel pretty close to it.

“Love is a game of tic-tac-toe, constantly waiting for the next x or o.” ~ Lang Leav

Sweet girl, I know your heart has so many scars and bruises on it but, this world has better plans for you than getting let down all the time. It might take years before you finally find it again but, every single person that you meet along the way is going to teach you what you want in a partner, and they are going to show you that you are more important than you even realize. Every single relationship that will fail, will make your heart stronger. And your scars will start to fade.

“We waste time looking for the perfect lover, instead of creating the perfect love.” ~ Tom Robbins

So, stop looking for the “one” right now. Let your heart heal on it’s own without any distractions. Love will leave you feeling defeated time and time again, but it is so worth it in the end.

Because in the end, love will leave you shining and it will leave you breathing with fresh lungs that don’t remember any of those boys who broke your heart a long time ago.

Don’t give up on the possibilities of love. You are going to find it one day, I promise. And when you do, you’ll know that love was never your enemy after all. Love was just a friend trying to show you how strong your heart could be and how much love you already had inside of you.

“In the flush of love’s light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.”

~ Maya Angelou
