Why do people want to take away Planned Parenthood?
Like I’ve said many times, please do your research before you bash something. Planned Parenthood provides services for many people, but especially individuals of low-income. These low-income individuals typically live in low-income communities with few resources. Half of the patients Planned Parenthood cares for are covered through Medicaid. Have you ever went to your local Health Department for care or care for your child? Essentially, Planned Parenthood is the same type of service. So why would you want to take that away? What makes one service acceptable in your eyes but the other deemed “evil”?
Planned Parenthood offers services in birth control, HIV testing, pregnancy testing, STD testing, pelvic exams, breast exams, mammograms, cervical cancer screenings, infertility, incontinence, colposcopy- I’ll stop there, but I could keep going! They offer endless services, not only for women but for men too. They help the LGBTQ community. They help women of color- did you know Latina and African American women are much more likely to die from cervical cancer? That’s why it’s so important for these women to have access to preventative screenings that can detect cancer and other conditions early.
So why do you want to take Planned Parenthood away?
I’m sure your argument will be because they offer abortions. And before this goes any further I completely respect your stance on being against abortions. However, abortions are only a small percentage of the services performed at Planned Parenthood. And if a woman decided to get an abortion whether you agree or not, wouldn’t you rather it be a safe legal procedure? Isn’t it better than the alternative? Dangerous methods, or illegal “back alley” services. Like I said, I respect your beliefs and choice not to. But attacking a service like Planned Parenthood for one thing you don’t believe in harms access to comprehensive care for many women and men.
So please, before you say Planned Parenthood should be defunded, get the facts and focus on all of the good.
