14 Awesome Cover Songs To Jumpstart Any Study Session

As we move into deep November, late night study sessions will become more and more commonplace as students of all shapes and sizes attempt to claw their peers’ eyes out and hunker down for finals. As it is not yet crunch time, here are a few cover songs that can readily serve as a pleasant distraction from your work.

1. Jimmy Eat World – We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (Taylor Swift)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLrK9tnVS-w&w=1280&h=720%5D

The 2000s pop-emo darling covered Taylor Swift’s breakup anthem not too long ago, and managed to turn it into something that feels straight of a 2006 romantic teen drama starring Hillary Duff.

2. Fall Out Boy – Hold On We’re Coming Home (Drake)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f63Pg7L5vec&w=1280&h=720%5D

From working with Elton John to paying homage to one of the world’s biggest rappers, Fall Out Boy is really pushing the genre envelope. Logically speaking, Skrillex is probably next.

3. Taylor Swift – Riptide (Vance Joy)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GGRdwfhl-U&w=1280&h=720%5D

Many of the YouTube comments for this one read something along the lines of “if you thought she was only able to pump out vapid pop songs, THINK AGAIN!!!!” Which in YouTube language, is amongst the highest honors one can get.

4. Miley Cyrus – Summertime Sadness (Lana Del Rey)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93CZ6oFR8Q0&w=1280&h=720%5D

Miley brings the pipez.

5. Reel Big Fish – Take On Me (A-ha)

The 1980’s classic gets the ska treatment. Hard to outdo the original, but Reel Big Fish certainly brings the brass.

6. Save Ferris – Come On Eileen (Dexy’s Midnight Runners)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCzWPBR30Nk&w=960&h=720%5D

Ska goes 80’s?

7. Joe Ardizzone + Nate Buccieri – Creep (Radiohead)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVtss108EjU&w=960&h=720%5D

This clip, featuring a New York City bartender at one of NYC’s most esteemed piano bars, went viral about a year or so ago. Deservedly so.

8. Mayday Parade ft. Vic Fuentes – Somebody I Used To Know (Goyte ft. Kimbra)

If you’re looking to get transported back to seventh grade, to the moment when you found out your “girlfriend” that you never really even talked to has dumped you over lack of general communication, this is the song for you.

9. Richard Cheese – Get Down With The Sickness (Disturbed)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at02Fvdhk2I&w=1280&h=720%5D

For context, here’s the original.

10. Plan B. – Runaway (Kayne West)

Something tells me the collective ego of Plan B. doesn’t even make a dent in Kanye’s.

11. This Awesome Mariachi Band – Dammit (Blink 182)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6cQOcq91mo&w=960&h=720%5D

If the Mariachi bands that rule New York City subways did this every now and then, I think they’d definitely see an uptick in donations from 22 year-old’s wearing Dickies.

12. Jimi Hendrix – All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLV4_xaYynY&w=1280&h=720%5D

While composing this sliver of content, I was also gchatting with a friend. Both of us were attempting to “catch up,” even though it’s clear we’re slowly losing touch and probably will barely be friends once we’re 30. Anyway, I noted I was doing this post and he said it was mandatory to include this song. Consider this a tribute to a slowly dying friendship.

13. Joanna Wang – Wild World (Cat Stevens)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnlQT1I5K9s&w=1280&h=720%5D

Very captivating. Worth a listen or four.

14. Nickelback – Sexy And I Know It (LMFAO)

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Kv0hmUq8Tk&w=1280&h=720%5D

Whatever you think of Nickelback, one thing is clear — they’re having a lot of fun out there. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
