Go to any social event made up of 22-27 year-olds; it’ll be filled with talk about jobs — how “it’s good for now, but it’s not what I’d ultimately like to do“ — and passionate talk of #sideprojects; people rabidly expounding on their ideas for apps, TV shows, and clothing lines. The talk here will be blazingly romantic, but substantially empty.
“I’ve been slacking,” they’ll probably say. “It’s tough, you know?”
It is tough. Which is why for many, these creative dreams will end up dying. We’d rather hang out with friends, go hiking someone who “we might actually have a shot with”, or sit around watching those excellent VH1 top 100 countdowns. Eventually, as we grow up and become “actual adults,” the move seems to be swapping these ‘semblances of dreams for financial stability, and families.
The catch though, is that for very small number of us these dreams will actually happen. And that’s what keeps us going; the rare, almost unquantifiable energy of doing something that’s 100% you — your sweat, your toil, your accomplishment. Your mark on the world.
This playlist then, is for all the homies who are taking their Saturday afternoons to live out the unfinished seasons of How To Make It In America — for those traveling 200 miles to have a 40 second conversation with a potentially gamechanging contact who wasn’t even that interested in the first place. For those keeping it alive, one delusional day at a time.
