How To Finally Be Authentically You

By

This girl told me a while ago that she felt like she was a liar. She was one person to some people and another person to others.

I have felt this way too so I couldn’t tell her, “Just be yourself!” I knew that was bull.

They always say Become yourself! and you can feel the truth in that.

But, for real, WTF?

In the movie I Heart Huckabees, characters repeat “How am I not myself?” over and over again.

And you can feel the truth in that.

You can’t be anything but yourself but you can’t stop from becoming something else too.

Yes, very wise.

I had a teacher in high school, Mrs. Brown. So hot. I wanted to kiss her – so did everyone else in the class (girls and boys, she was just so kissable). She was a professional though, she didn’t kiss any of her students.

She didn’t act like anything else but a teacher. Even though she was a lover at home (maybe at other people’s homes too). Maybe she was an angry daughter at home. Maybe she went to music festivals and had fun with drugs.

In the classroom, not so much.

Does that mean Mrs. Brown was being inauthentic? Does that mean that she wasn’t being her full self in class?

Not at all.

If you’re a communist, I wouldn’t expect to sell many home security systems by discussing why your Party is misunderstood.

Focusing on the benefits of your home security system doesn’t make you an inauthentic person – it just makes you good salesperson.

Not voicing your political opinions at a family gathering doesn’t make you a coward, it just means you’d rather focus on enjoying the companies of loved ones.

Maybe you can be the same exact person doing the same things in every area of your life.

Probably you’re not though. You probably treat your kids differently than your significant other and your boss differently than the mailman.

Not treating them differently or worse. We are all different and connect differently with each other.
