If I Were To Rewrite Our Story, This Is What It Would Be

By

Chained on what ifs and maybes

Always somewhere in between

Never something I can be sure of

A love that was almost there –

Almost within my grasp

Yet somehow beyond my reach

Trapped in the middle of moving forward and looking back

A push and a pull, a tug of war

A raging battle between the heart and mind

Refusing to accept what has long been known

About the “us” I was trying to hold on to

The “us” that will always remain a question

A You and I that don’t deserve an “and”

If I were to rewrite our story

I’d begin from a few generations back

When blurred lines do not seem to exist

And being nonchalant is far from attractive

Maybe then, we’ll both be brave

Maybe then, we will happen

If I were to rewrite our story

I’ll set it at a different place

Where no one gives a damn whether things are going to work out

Where respect to oneself and to one another reigns

Where having real emotions doesn’t make you weak

Maybe then, we’ll both be honest

Maybe then, we will happen

If I were to rewrite our story

I’ll do my best to make us happen

Because in this lifetime, I was too scared to take the risk

I never admitted how much I wanted us, too.

If I were to rewrite our story

I will say yes and mean it

Avoid all the chasing and mind games

Run straight into your arms

If I were to rewrite our story

I will surrender for once

So that I won’t have to write these things

Filling this paper with words that I failed to let you know

Longing for what we could have been

Regretting the things I didn’t do

If I were to rewrite our story

There will be nothing in between

I’ll take your hand and together we’ll write our story

The story that we didn’t have the chance to live up to in this lifetime.
