5 Ways To Be Alone After A Break-Up

By

1. Read

Immerse yourself in different worlds. Accompany yourself with new people – learn about them, get attached to them, relate to them, allow them to teach you something. Get lost in a reality that is entirely new. Keep an open mind, expand your imagination, discover all that is outside of what you’re used to. When we are feeling particularly alone in life, reading will always provide instant comfort. Characters can become just as an important part of our lives as any physical being. Writing is the loneliest job there is, yet the end-product is more full of life than anything else.

2. Go hiking

Although being alone in the woods can make you feel entirely on your own, it also allows you to reconnect with yourself, which is a vital thing in life. Existing among nature makes you feel reestablished in the world. Soak in the comfortable, undisturbed quiet. Take the time to notice your surroundings and all the tiny, beautiful things you take for granted every single day. There’s just something about being left to your own thoughts in nature, with no distractions, that makes you feel completely at peace with everything. You’ll reconnect with yourself, and realize that it’s okay to be on your own.

3. Volunteer

There are other people in this world with bigger problems than yours. Volunteering can be humbling, and you will always feel better after. Play with lonely dogs at a shelter, serve dinner at a soup kitchen, create care packages for families in need. If it becomes a regular occurrence, you won’t feel as alone, because helping others is a fulfilling phenomenon. Putting a smile on for others and getting a smile in return will always fill you with contentment.

4. Don’t dwell on the past

Guilt is a useless emotion. It accomplishes nothing aside from making you feel bad about yourself due to something you can’t change. The past is the past. LEAVE IT THERE. There’s nothing you can do to alter it, so look ahead instead at how you can alter your future for the better. If you spend all your time alone dwelling on what “coulda”, “shoulda”, you’ll get nowhere. You won’t grow, you won’t thrive – you’ll rot. Take your alone time to appreciate the present and look forward, without regretting the past.

5. Be selfish

Put yourself first. Do only what makes you happy. Cater to your health. Exercise, indulge, have fun, feel good about who you are. Allow the burdens of others to only be theirs. Focus only on how to better yourself, improve who you are, move further up in the world. Love yourself for your flaws and imperfections, even if not everyone does. Being selfish after a break-up is key.
