This Is For You When You Feel Like Giving Up

By

They say nothing worth having ever comes easy. Relationships. Careers. Marriage. Life. It can all make you feel stressed or overwhelmed. You go through rocky moments, are faced with one too many challenges, and sometimes reach your breaking point, where you feel it’s just easier to give up.

The concept of never giving up is ingrained in us, from famous people’s quotes to movie lines, but I’m going to share a pivotal truth with you: there’s a time to give up and a time to keep going. And in the midst of your struggle, when you’re analyzing if it’s worth pushing through all the barriers, there are certain things you need to remember.

Struggle, like everything else, is temporary.

You will inevitably face struggles at some point in your life. You will go through situations that leave you confused, questioning why they happened to you. Sometimes they make no sense, they seem unfair, and unfortunately, you may never understand why they ever happen to begin with. That’s because struggle doesn’t always come with a reason or an explanation, sometimes it is what it is.

Struggle doesn’t last forever unless you make it. If you look at struggle as your downfall and succumb to your own suffering, then you risk becoming stagnant. If you look at struggle as an opportunity to fight against the odds and grow, then you will get stronger and persevere. We can’t control the variables of life. We can only control how we handle what’s thrown at us, how we move forward. And if today is terrible, don’t forget that you have another chance tomorrow.

There is a correlation between compromise and giving up.

Many people think of relationships when they hear the word compromise because relationships are full of compromise. Sometimes you have to let go of something you want in order to make your partner happy, you compromise to fulfill your partner’s needs. This “giving up” can be necessary for the betterment of the situation.

However, if you’re compromising your happiness for a goal you’ve set, you need to take a step back to view that situation in totality and weigh the benefits. Are you compromising and giving up more of yourself, your time, energy, emotions, thoughts, than what something is worth or what’s coming back to you?

Giving up doesn’t always equal failure.

Sometimes it’s appropriate to let go in order to move forward, in order to grow. You finally give up when there is nothing left to do when you have nothing left to give. You give up when the road you are traveling down dead ends into nothing. The fact that you had to give up doesn’t mean you failed, it means you’ve recognized that you’ve exhausted all of your options. It can mean you’ve raised your white flag, you’ve surrendered, asked for help, and accepted that it’s not conducive for you to continue on the road alone.

From that point, you need to make a decision on how to move forward. Reevaluate what it is that you want, the factors that surround you, change your viewpoint and expectations. We all want to succeed at what it is we’re trying to do, we all want to thrive and be happy.

Every situation is measured by your perspective.

While letting go is sometimes necessary, there are times when you shouldn’t allow giving up to be an option. When things seem too difficult or impossible, embrace them as a challenge, knowing that growth and personal victories are achieved through persistence and perseverance. If you know that what’s on the other side is worth it and will enrich your life, then keep pushing through the “hard,” no matter how many times you think you’ll fail. But also, utilize the resources you have, asking for help if you need to. Be true to yourself and know your needs, and know when to hold and when to fold.

Our struggles are only as difficult as we make them out to be. We see what we want to see, or what we need to see in order to cope. You may sometimes feel like you’re suffocating in your own life, that there isn’t a way out, but to keep things in perspective, remember that your worst day is someone else’s best day.

But you are worth your own fight.

You are worth the successes that come through the challenges. You are worth the good that comes out of the bad moments. Life isn’t going to be easy, but it’s a gift that’s completely worth it.
