Love yourself first. Please, I beg you. I beg you to learn to love yourself. It will make loving someone else hurt less. You will have to shift your focus. You’ll have to stop putting everyone else ahead of you. You will have to stop thinking about everyone else for a minute. You will have to focus on yourself and stop trying to be something for someone else. Start being you, for you.
Take the time to get to know yourself. Truly know yourself. Take a part each piece of your soul like a puzzle. Try to figure out all the pieces. Try to put yourself back together. Trace each piece of that puzzle. Feel how different each piece is. How necessary each piece is. Without each piece, that puzzle is incomplete. You, are incomplete.
Take yourself out. Go grab coffee by yourself. Eat dinner by the window in a corner booth, alone. Go to the movies alone. Sit on a bench by yourself. Take a walk. Go to the beach, alone. Find the good in being alone. Find the beauty in it. Be content with being alone and not feeling lonely.
Become confident in who you are. Look in the mirror. Breathe in. Breathe out. Do you see your reflection? Do you see the person staring back at you? Do you see how beautiful that person is? Are you ready to love that person staring back at you?
Because I need you to be. I need you to be ready, to call yourself wanted and worthy. I need you to be ready to pick yourself. For once I need you to choose you. I need you to love you. You don’t need validation from the world. You don’t need someone else to pick you when you have the power to pick yourself, always.
I need you to become whole on your own. I need you to want that. To try to be whole on your own. You need to know that you can do and be all these things on your own. You must. You have to love yourself.
You need to let your guard down. Release your worries. Let your fears fade into the chaos.
The world needs people like you. The world needs us to love ourselves a little more. That boy you’re chasing, he needs you to love yourself a little more. That girl you’re trying to keep, she needs you to love yourself a little more.
Stop being so hard on yourself. Be more forgiving and gentle with your own heart.
You are important. Say that aloud “You are important”. I need you to mean it, to really mean it. To truly try and give yourself a break. To love yourself before you keep trying to love another.
People are going to let you down. They are going to fall short. They will be all the things they swore they weren’t. They are going to abandon you. They are going to move on without you. They will hurt you and try to wreck you. But you mustn’t let them. You can’t let them be the storm that destroys you. You must rebuild yourself. You must keep on.
So my advice to you, my advice to myself: love yourself, first.
