10 Streamable Movies To Get You Through The Winter

By

In capitulation to this unending winter, I spent my morning making plans to remain holed up in my apartment until the ice and snow has melted. (Winter, you relentless witch, you win.) As you might expect, browsing Netflix in search of streamable movies was an important part of that process.

Assuming that 97% of you are ready to wave the white flag to this winter as well, I’m sharing the fruits of my labor.  I’ve pored over the Netflix streaming catalog and come up with 10 streamable movies that you have probably seen, but might have forgotten about and definitely want to see again.

1. Tommy Boy

The late, great Chris Farley and David Spade embark on a cross-country sales trip to save an auto parts company.  Shenanigans predictably ensue.  This is one of my personal favorites, and is eminently quotable.

2. Ghostbusters

Okay, so you’ve probably not forgotten about Ghostbusters.  I think all I need to say is this: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

3. Clueless

Alicia Silverstone treats Brittany Murphy like a paper doll, and finds love along the way.  Bonus: Marvel at how Stacey Dash and Paul Rudd are both basically ageless, looking almost the same today as they did when this movie was released in 1995.

4. Grease

Not only have you probably not forgotten about Grease, you probably know all of the lyrics to most of the songs.  Go on, dance around your apartment to “You’re the One That I Want.”  It’s probably the only exercise you’re getting with all this snow anyway.

5. Heart and Souls

Robert Downey Jr. is a man who was born at the exact same moment four people died in a bus accident, and their ghosts keep him company.  Be ready for the end with a box of tissues.

6. Heathers

The original mean-girl movie, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.

7. The Addams Family

An impostor attempts to infiltrate the Addams Family.  A young Christina Ricci gets some of the best lines as Wednesday Addams.  (Case in point: “Are they made from real Girl Scouts?”)

8. Clue: The Movie

Fair warning: you have to appreciate camp to enjoy this madcap movie based on the board game.  If you do, you’re in for a treat.  Watch for Madeline Kahn’s famous “Flames, on the side of my face …” scene.

9. Heartbreakers

Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt are a mother-daughter con team trying to pull one over on Gene Hackman and Jason Lee.  As a Kevin Smith fan, I may be swayed by my affection for Jason Lee, but this is a movie that I’ve found amusing each time I’ve watched it.

10. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Christopher Lloyd’s Judge Doom gave me nightmares the first time I saw this live action/cartoon mash-up about a cartoon rabbit trying to prove his innocence when accused of murder, but this is a fun movie.
