I Have No Reason To Be Ashamed Of Being Parentally Funded

By

Lately on social media I’ve seen a lot of posts shaming people in their twenties that receive help from their parents. I can’t seem to figure out why.

There is nothing wrong with your parents having money to help you.

Growing up I always knew my dad was well-off, I would never call it rich but well-off enough that I don’t have to struggle. Having a dad like this taught me a lot in life such as money doesn’t grow on trees, life isn’t this easy straight road and working hard is the best way to achieve your dreams.

My dad pays my rent and he bought me my first car. He’s always paid for my school and that’s our agreement. If I stay in school, get good grades and don’t get into any trouble he will pay for my education and my apartment. I am not ashamed of this. I have no reason to be ashamed of the money that my father is able to give me.

I’m nineteen years old and I don’t need to work, I don’t struggle for money and if I wanted to stop working I could. But where would that take me? Absolutely nowhere. Of course, I go to school but what good is a degree if you have no real life experience? Instead of being a college kid who knows they don’t have to work for their money, I am a college kid who works two jobs. Even though I know I don’t have to.

On the weekends I work as a server at a family owned restaurant and I do it more because I enjoy it rather than just for the money. It has taught me a lot of life lessons as well, like money management, communication skills and how to write a resume. As for my other job I work at a veterinary clinic so I can get experience before applying to veterinary school. I’m learning a lot about the field and gaining skills that will help me in the long run such as safety measures, hospital protocols and what exactly its like to work at a vet’s office.

I choose to work these two jobs, and I enjoy them a lot. I am also very thankful to have my dad in my life. It’s unfair to make assumptions about kids whose parents are willing and able to help.

Don’t let other people put you down for the money your family has access to. That does not make our accomplishments any less valid. That does not make us greedy or lazy kids. We are capable of accomplishing anything just like everything else.
