Don’t Expect To Be Understood

By

The sad and ugly truth is, we aren’t meant to be understood by anyone. And I mean anyone. Despite being social animals, we humans hold back. We aren’t meant to expose ourselves to the prying eyes of outsiders. We aren’t meant to go bare and naked and display every single one of our wounds and scars.

We aren’t meant to be vulnerable animals.

You think your partner knows you, understands you, and accepts you fully?

Think again.

We aren’t meant to be understood. And often we forget that. We expect to be understood when really, we shouldn’t.

Don’t expect to be understood because everyone looks at you with tinted lenses. Everyone judges you based on their experience, on what they’ve gone through. The fact is, only you yourself know who you are and what you stand for, and no matter what you do, no one understands you more than yourself.

So why are we expecting others to understand us when sometimes, we don’t even know what we’re doing? We should be the ones questioning ourselves and looking deep inside us, instead of having others doing it for us isn’t it. We hide and build walls around ourselves, hoping that someone could see you from the outside and tear down these walls for you. We reveal certain things and hide others, and at the same time we expect to be understood.

What an irony isn’t it?

Don’t expect to be understood. Instead, understand yourself, give yourself some time to fully comprehend your miniscule life in this universe. Give yourself some time to find the real you, lost and left behind when you conform to societal norms, or when try to be someone you are not, or when try to go against your passions and dreams. Find your direction in life, your own Calcutta. Let everything go and head there, start a new life. You don’t need to be understood by anyone, as long as you know who you are, as long as you know what you stand for. The rest don’t matter, this is your life, and you are accountable for it. You. Not anyone else. At the end of the day, be answerable to yourself.

And perhaps, when you understand yourself, chances are others will understand you too.
