Coca-Cola’s Super Bowl ad featured expressions of patriotism by people other than heterosexual, Christian, white folks, so naturally Bigot Internet got its panties (made of repurposed lynching rope) in a mega twist. And more of a twist. And then they basically started barfing with outrage. I would post actual tweets as examples but I don’t want to give those people the exposure, and besides, you can easily imagine – lots of “we speak English here!” and “They took our jerbs!” etc.
Since then, I’ve been looking for the correct, hopefully eloquent, thoughtful words to hold their fast-food bloated hands and gently explain what in the original fuck America is about. Luckily, ageless unicorn of Atlanta news, Brenda Wood, handled that daunting task for me.
The quote on the Statue of Liberty doesn’t say ‘give me your English-speaking only, Christian-believing, heterosexual masses.’
It’s frustrating that we even still need to have these conversations wherein we are forced to explain in plain terms the basic value of inclusion, but it’s at least encouraging that sometimes the real talk comes from unexpected, far-reaching places, like a major news station in Georgia.
And to all the angry bigots on Twitter, let me speak on behalf of all Atlantans and say boycott if you want – THERE IS NO MORE COKE FOR YOU. Yes, Atlantans have that power.
