Just Date Someone Who Makes You Laugh

Twenty20 / @trucken44

It seems like such a basic concept. Just date someone who makes you laugh. We all have our checklists of qualities we’d want in a potential partner.

Loyal.
Respectful.
Trustworthy.
Sense of humor.
Nice ass.
Big D.

D for dimples! Get your mind out of the gutter.

For years I have had the same answer when someone asks what I want from a relationship. Ask anyone, my immediate response is always, “I just want to spend my life laughing.” I have actually turned down a date because while having the initial phone conversation with a guy, he didn’t get a joke I made and I had to explain it. Like, no thanks.

Even my dating profiles say, “I always think I’m the funniest person in the room.” This is no joke, people. (Ha, get it?) I love making people laugh. It’s almost selfish really–being an extroverted person and someone who puts a lot of effort into friendships, I need my friends to think I’m funny. My heart is full when I can make them laugh. This is applicable on the contrary as well–make me laugh and I will do just about anything for you.

Laughter is one of those natural medicines that can cure even the saddest of days. It’s a smile exploding. Having the right people around you that you can laugh until your stomach hurts and tears are rolling down your face are essential to your quality of life. An exchange of humor indicates that the people we like also like us.

Men get bonus points if you can laugh in bed. Life happens. We’ve all been in a situation where our bodies don’t cooperate or make noises we don’t really want them to at that moment. If something silly happens and your partner can’t laugh with you, it’ll make the situation that much worse. Sex is vulnerable to begin with, it’s a necessity to have a significant other that is good natured and can go with the flow.

On the same note, I FIRMLY believe that you can have sexual tension in a relationship without ever taking your clothes off. I’m not even talking about heavy petting or dry humping like most of us (all of us) did in high school. I’m talking about making me smile and laugh, playful banter and prolonged eye contact after you just teased me about something. Yes. That’s real and it works.

Some of your most vulnerable positions happen with your mouth open. You know that study that says dogs trust you when they yawn around you? It’s similar for humans. Pro tip: if you’re ever wondering if people in your friend group are attracted to one another or secretly dating, pay attention to who they look at when they laugh. When a group of people laugh, people will instinctively look at the person they feel closest to in that group.

I’ll leave you with my dating motto: humor and chivalry are the best lube. Good luck. TC mark
