Mark Zuckerberg Speaks Out About What The Social Network Got Wrong
This weekend Facebook celebrity-CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke out about what ‘the Facebook movie’ The Social Network got wrong at a Y Combinator event.
“Where do you want to start?” Zuckerberg responded when asked to explain the main differences between The Social Network and reality.
“It’s interesting what they got right. Every single shirt and fleece that I had in that movie is actually a shirt or fleece that I actually own,” Zuckerberg said. The audience laughed and broke into applause.
“There’s all this stuff that they got wrong,” he continued, appearing somewhat dismissive, “and a bunch of random details they got right.” For example, Zuckerberg said, the girl that dumps him in the first scene of the film was completely made up.
But the main difference, Zuckerberg concluded, was thematic. The Social Network framed him as building Facebook in an effort to get women and be accepted into elite social institutions, like fraternities. But what the filmmakers “just [couldn’t] wrap their heads around [was] the idea that someone might build something because they like building things.”
