Authorities Release Video Of Cleveland 12-Year-Old Being Shot By Police

Cleveland, Ohio 12-year-old, Tamir Rice was shot by police last Saturday after they responded to a phone call that there was a boy in a nearby park wielding a gun. Upon arriving, police shot and killed Rice. Rice, it turns out, was carrying an airsoft pellet gun. Per Time:

Tamir Rice was shot Saturday by an officer responding to a call about someone with a gun near a playground. Police say Tamir was told to raise his hands, then reached into his waistband for what appeared to be a firearm.

In August of this year, a Dayton, Ohio man and father, John Crawford, was shot while carrying a pellet gun in a Walmart and talking on the phone.

Cleveland authorities had previously declined to release the video, citing sensitivity to Rice’s family. However, after the family demanded the video be released, authorities relented.

The caller told dispatchers twice that the gun was “probably fake,” but that detail was not relayed to the responding officers.

At 20 seconds, Tamir appears to reach for his waistband. He is shot immediately after. The below video of Rice before the shooting was also released today. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
