18 Year Old Leaves Home, Sues Parents For Not Providing “Emotional And Financial Support”
Here’s the situation, Rachel Canning an 18 year old, cheerleader, and high school honor roll student in New Jersey is suing her parents. Why? Here’s what she’s claiming:
that her mother and father tossed her out of their home and cut her off financially is suing them for immediate support, current private-school fees and future college tuition.
Twitter hates her.
I mean REALLY hates her.
Maybe a little rough but she’s 18, she can vote and die for her country now. But why have her parents throw her out? Here’s what her parents claim:
she moved out because she didn’t want to do chores or keep a curfew, among other disagreements.
That’s pretty different from throwing her out. Let’s see what else:
“We love our child and miss her. This is terrible. It’s killing me and my wife,” Rachel’s father, Sean Canning, a town administrator and retired police officer, tells the Daily Record. “We have a child we want home. We’re not Draconian and now we’re getting hauled into court. She’s demanding that we pay her bills but she doesn’t want to live at home, and she’s saying, ‘I don’t want to live under your rules.’” The rules, he notes, include reconsidering her relationship with a boyfriend who may be a bad influence, being respectful, and abiding by her curfew.
That’s actually very sad. It looks like this might actually be a case of a girl who’s boy crazy. So, the parents have kept her car which they bought and they aren’t paying for her private school anymore. Rachel Canning has been living with a friend whose father is an attorney and they decided to sue Rachel’s parents to get them to pay for the rest of her private high school as well as access to her college fund so she can go to college. She also wants them to pay the legal fees she’s accrued while suing them which are over $12,000 at this point.

Mary Coogan, assistant director of the nonprofit Advocates for Children of New Jersey says this is pretty unheard of “This young woman is actually saying, ‘I want the court to compel my parents to continue to support me financially. That’s what’s unique in this case.”
I predict that this will get picked up by major media outlets today and the narrative will be “today’s kids are spoiled.” Well sure, some are and some have always been. Don’t let it get you down. Just restrain yourself from suing your parents for not spending money on you and you’re keeping up your end.
Oh, and remember that if you’re hating on Canning, this is the girl her parents raised. We learn from what we see and besides this kind of thing used to be cool (minus the suing).
