Don’t stay in one place when you’re ready to leave. Don’t allow your history to tether you to the past. You don’t have to keep repeating your routine because you’ve grown used to it, because it’s the scary to switch things up, because you would rather live a predictable life than step into the unknown. You have the power to change your path at any point in time. You don’t have to stay somewhere you feel uncomfortable. You don’t have to settle.
Don’t stay in one place because you feel guilty about leaving others behind. You don’t owe anyone your time or your attention. While you might feel like you’re abandoning the people you care about when you move to another location or switch career paths or change schools, the people who matter the most aren’t going to lose touch with you. They aren’t going to be pissed about you making a change, either. They are going to be proud of you. They are going to encourage your growth. They are going to want what’s best for you.
Don’t stay in one place out of fear. Yes, there’s a chance you’re going to be unhappy if you change your path. But you have to stop and ask yourself, are you happy right now? Would you be happy continuing down this same road for the rest of your life? If you are in desperate need of a change, if you’re sick of your current existence, then you’re going to need to take a risk. You’re going to have to put yourself in an uncomfortable situation. You’re going to have to believe in yourself.
Don’t stay in one place because you feel like the timing isn’t right yet. Don’t allow yourself to procrastinate. Don’t put off the things that mean the most to you. If you’re looking for reasons to avoid making a change, you’re always going to come up with something. There are a million excuses you can use, one after the other. But you have to make an active decision to stop putting things off until tomorrow that you can accomplish today. You have to stop waiting until the future to change your life when you have the potential right now.
Don’t stay in one place because you’re okay with sacrificing your own dreams in order to support someone else’s. In a strong relationship, you will support each other. You won’t have to give up everything so your partner can have what they want. You will come to a fair compromise, instead. If you’re in a relationship or a friendship that is forcing you to give up the life you’ve always wanted, then you might want to reconsider whether your sacrifices are worth it. You might want to reevaluate whether your situation is one-sided.
Don’t stay in one place when you’re ready to move onto the next stage of your life. Don’t hold yourself back out of fear or self-doubt. If there’s something you want, something you cannot stop thinking about, then chase after it. Today. Not tomorrow.
