When You Love Someone, You Don’t Talk Badly About Them

When You Love Someone, You Don’t Talk Shit About Them

When you’re going through a hard time in your relationship, you might want to reach out to a friend who has been through a similar situation. You might want to vent about your issues. You might want to get relationship advice from someone you trust, someone who is going to lead you in the right direction.

However, there’s a big difference between sharing a few key details with your friends in order to get their advice — and badmouthing your person to anyone who will listen to you rant because you’re pissed and don’t care who you hurt.

When you love someone, you don’t hop online every time you have an argument in order to talk shit about them. You don’t shoot a text your ex in order to complain about your person either. You don’t let the rest of the world know what’s bothering you while leaving your person in the dark.

When you love someone and are going through a hard time with them, you take a more mature route. You sit down with them and have a conversation about your feelings. You let them know exactly how you feel about the situation instead of telling everyone else in the world while giving your person the silent treatment, hoping they guess what’s wrong, and hoping they magically make everything okay again.

When you love someone, you don’t talk shit about them. You don’t tell them they’re smart and strong and beautiful to their face and then poke fun at them behind their back. You don’t use swears and derogatory terms to describe them when you’re with your buddies. You don’t treat them like crap when they aren’t looking because they’re never going to know the difference anyway, because you believe the nasty things you say are never going to get back to them.

When you love someone, you show respect for them, even when they aren’t in the room.

Every relationship is different. Some couples don’t like to share their dirty laundry with their friends. Other couples are more open about their struggles and rough patches – and there’s nothing wrong with that. But when you love someone, you shouldn’t be swearing about how you hate them and how they ruined your life, even when you’re upset. If you’re saying those things, then you might not be in the right relationship. It might be time to start something new.

When you love someone, you don’t want to hurt their feelings. You don’t want to make them look like the bad guy in front of other people. You don’t want to get revenge by dragging their name through the mud.

When you love someone, you treat them with respect even when you’re angry, even when you’re in the middle of an argument, even when you aren’t in the mood to look at them.

When you love someone, you would never dream of saying something unforgivable because you would never dream of hurting them – and you would never dream of losing them. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
