Being A Skeptic Isn’t A Bad Thing

By

Being a skeptic can be dangerous because it can cause you to push people away. It can cause you to isolate yourself. It can cause you to think the worst of everyone.

But sometimes, being a skeptic is actually a good thing.

If you assume you can’t trust anyone, you’re on your own, you don’t have anyone in your corner except for yourself — then you’re going to do a better job taking care of yourself. You’re going to realize your future is in your own hands.

When you’re in a bad situation, you aren’t going to wait around for someone else to come rescue you. You’re going to take care of yourself. You’re going to figure out a solution on your own. You’re going to assert your independence.

When you’re a skeptic, you’re going to analyze everything. You’re never going to make decisions on a whim. You’re never going to agree to something that sounds too good to be true.

If someone is trying to schmooze you, you’re going to see straight through to their manipulative tendencies. You’re going to catch the warning signs. You aren’t going to walk blindly into a bad situation.

The caution you take could save yourself from heartache. It could save you from a scam. It could save you from an extremely toxic situation.

When you’re a skeptic, you aren’t going to hand over your trust easily. You’re going to make other people work for your affection. You’re going to make sure they’re worthy of your love before you waste a significant amount of time on them.

You aren’t going to let yourself get taken advantage of by a pretty face. You’re going to tread lightly, even when your heart is pulling you in a certain direction. You’re going to make sure you’re able to trust this person before you lower your guard.

When you’re a skeptic, you’re under the assumption everyone is only looking out for themselves, which is why you’ll never feel guilty for looking out for yourself. You won’t apologize for doing what’s best for yourself. You’ll practice self-care. You’ll say no when your plate is too full to take on another chore. You won’t worry about hurting feelings, because you realize the feelings that matter the most are your own.

This type of thinking doesn’t mean you’re selfish. It means you understand the importance of taking care of your own mind and body, because you cannot help anyone else until you help yourself.

Even though there are good aspects about being a skeptic, you cannot let your mindset get in the way of your relationships. You cannot push everyone who loves you away under the assumption they’re going to hurt you one day. You cannot fall into the habit of believing you’re safer on your own than in someone else’s arms.

But you should always keep a healthy dose of skepticism. You should always be aware of your surroundings, aware of intentions, aware of what you might be getting yourself into. You should always watch yourself, because the best person to look out for you is you.
