Your 'History' Is Not A Good Enough Reason To Get Back Together

Your ‘History’ Is Not A Good Enough Reason To Get Back Together

You should get back together because you regret parting every single day and genuinely believe you can make your relationship work a second time. You should get back together because you have both grown as people and have overcome whatever problems that separated you in the first place. You should get back together because you are willing to put in the effort to make each other happy. You should get back together because you make sense together.

Your history is not a good enough reason to get back together. You don’t owe someone your heart because you’ve known them for a long time. You don’t have to rebuild a broken relationship because you feel guilty about moving on.

Stop feeling like walking away from them forever means you wasted all of the weeks, months, years you spent with them. Think of it this way instead: If you get back together with someone who is not right for you, you will be wasting even more time. Time that could be spent searching for someone better suited for you — or searching for yourself.

You cannot get sidetracked by how much history you have shared. History is not always a good thing. Yes, there were good moments scattered throughout your past. This person was there for you when you went through a loss, when you reached a major milestone, when you endured a personal crisis. They already know everything about you, your quirks and your strengths, your talents and your flaws.

Getting back with your ex means skipping the courting phase. It means avoiding the awkwardness of first dates with strangers and hookup apps that lead nowhere. It means jumping back into a situation where you know exactly what you are getting. That can be tempting, but an old relationship is not always the right relationship.

Stop glorifying the past. Stop referring to your ex as the one who got away. Stop assuming your relationship was meant to last — because it didn’t last. You broke up. You gave up on your love.

Sometimes, you can make a relationship work the second time around, but most of the time that isn’t the case. Most of the time, splitting up means you were not right for each other. It means your time together has come to a natural end.

You should only be getting back together with your ex if you have a good reason. You should only be getting back together if you are both ready to put effort into making the relationship work. You should only be getting back together if you made each other happier than you have ever been before and you cannot imagine moving forward without each other.

If the only reason you want to get back with your ex is because you have history together, if you cannot think of one more reason why you belong together, then you should rethink your decision to reunite. You should leave your relationship in the past. You should give yourself permission to move on. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
