Read This When You’re Stressed About The Future

When you’re always thinking about the future, you’re doing yourself a disservice. You’re driving yourself crazy over issues that probably aren’t even going to happen. You’re being a pessimist, imagining the worst case scenario even if it isn’t the most likely scenario.

When you’re always thinking about the future, you create problems that don’t actually exist. You ask yourself what would I do if this happened or how would I handle this situation — but it’s impossible for every single one of those what ifs to come true. It’s good to be prepared, but it’s unhealthy to be obsessive. It’s unhealthy to run a potential through your head over and over again until your heart hurts.

When you’re always thinking about the future, you forget to enjoy the present. You don’t take in your surroundings. You don’t see the beauty in your friends, in your family, in the nature around you. Your eyes slide past the good moments in life, because you’re living in your thoughts instead of living in the real world.

When you’re always thinking about the future, you stress yourself out. You never enjoy the food that you’re eating or your drives down the highway, because you’re always waiting for what’s going to happen next. You’re wondering where your actions are going to lead instead of living in the moment, going with the flow.

When you’re always thinking about the future, you stare at the big picture instead of paying attention to the little things, the small stepping stones that will lead you to success. You place too much emphasis on events that don’t matter and ignore the things that do.

When you’re always thinking about the future, you destroy your present. You convince yourself that two years from now or ten years from now will be better than right now. You make the future seem promising and the present seem dreary.

That’s why it’s time to put an end to your endless worrying. You can’t keep dreading potentials or you’re going to make yourself sick. You’re going to stress yourself out until you explode.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you should go through life without ever thinking about tomorrow. Do what you have to do to prepare yourself for the next day, work your ass off — and then let your mind rest. Stop staying up past 2 AM, thinking about the what ifs until you pass out. Stop torturing yourself with unnecessary thoughts.

Stop stressing about tomorrow, because you deserve happiness today. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
