Why I Refuse To Let This Be The Year Of ‘Lasts’

By

Senior year.

This is it guys, our final year of high school.

Our last football game.

Our last Homecoming.

Our last childhood holidays.

Our last year of wandering these halls.

It’s hard to believe that next year around this time we will all be scattered across the country. Some of us will stay at home, some of us will decide to work a couple years before we go to college, some of us may even travel to different countries. One thing is certain: we will all be in different places.

Throughout our senior year there are going to be so many “lasts,” but while we are focusing on how sad we are going to be when it’s over, we end up not enjoying what’s happening in the moment.

My friends and I already have sappy goodbye songs picked out that we want played at graduation. Lyrics that have already made us cry even though we still have an entire year left with each other. I have decided that I do not want to spend my senior year depressed every day because I only have a year left with some of the best people in my life.

I refuse to spend senior year in the mindset of “lasts.”

They say that high school is the best years of your life and I intend to make senior year one of the best. This is going to be a year we will never forget. This is the year that we cheer for our guys’ basketball team so loud that afterwards we can’t even speak. This is the year that we have the most insane school spirit and show up all of those underclassmen. This is the year that we dress ridiculous to school picture day because we are seniors so who cares right? This is going to be the most life-changing year.

This is the year that we show leadership to our classmates below us. This is one of the most important things that we need to do senior year. All of my close friends have always been older than me and I’ve always looked up to them. This year we are the ones that the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are going to look up to. They need to look up to strong, independent, and loving seniors. Not seniors that focus on every day being their last in high school.

This year will be filled with so many “lasts,” but in the years yet to come there are going to be so many “firsts.”

Our first time filling out scholarships.

Our first college campus visits.

Our first college acceptances.

Senior year will be bittersweet, but I cannot wait for the adventures that are yet to come.
