10 Songs I Will Always Sing With You

By

1. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye

If I’m at karaoke with a big group, this is the song I choose. Everyone pretty much knows it and it’s innocuous and fun enough. Get like 10 people around three microphones and this is all right to try and pull off. If I’m alone, I try and sing all the different parts. Oh yes.

2. Time After Time – Cyndi Lauper

As “Parks and Rec’s” April Ludgate just proved, “Everyone loves this song. It’s amazing.”

3. Alone – Heart

TIL NOW I ALWAYS GOT BY ON MY OWN / I NEVER REALLY CARED UNTIL I MET YOU

Just shut it down. It does not get better than that chorus. Everyone else, go home.

4. Heartbreaker – Pat Benatar

You should sing this while smashing up an ex-boyfriend’s car with a couple of girlfriends. You need some empowering? Look no further than Pat Benatar.

5. Go Your Own Way, Everywhere, and Landslide – Fleetwood Mac

Pretty much any Fleetwood Mac song will do. Just put on Fleetwood Mac. If you’ve never sung “Landslide” with one other person, late at night with the windows down driving on an empty highway, you have not lived.

6. Always Be My Baby – Mariah Carey

My friend Liz and I put this song on at a party and tried to drunkenly hit the high notes. No regrets. It was a great bonding moment. BELT IT, GURL.

7. Hold On For One More Day – Wilson Phillips

As demonstrated beautifully in “Bridesmaids,” you’re gonna want to sing this song with a cluster of lady-friends. Especially after one of you has just overcome some obstacle and you’re celebrating the triumph of womanhood.

8. Africa – Toto

I don’t care where this is playing. Barnes & Noble, Starbucks, a funeral — I will burst out with the chorus like Africa depends on it.

9. Paradise City – Guns N Roses

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHEUsGhUtgg]

We used to sing this a lot around the campfire at my summer camp when I was a kid. Is that weird? I’m just now considering how weird that is for children to sing. Either way, I always associate this with singing out loud with a big group of people I love. From the opening lines, it’s anthemic.

10. Hooked On A Feeling – Blue Swede

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo-qweh7nbQ]

The beginning of this song is so weird, but I will sing the crap out of this song if it comes on. This reminds me of when the weather gets nice and people sit outside on the grass and laugh and enjoy the sunshine. It should play over a summertime montage because I-HI-YI-E-YI! AM HOOKED ON A FEELING!
