What It’s Really Like To Go After Your Big Dreams

By

As a kid, we had big dreams. We exclaimed, “When I grow up, I want to be a singer!” or one would say a doctor, an owner of a restaurant, a famous writer or the big one, be the president.

Then we grow up and realize how many steps it takes to get there and just how difficult it can be. We have to log in lots of late night studying, we have to sacrifice some time with family and friends, we have to face fears of rejection, we have to try to begin again after failure, and we need an insurmountable amount of confidence in ourselves.

The thing is, nothing worthwhile comes easy and as cliché as that sounds, nothing can ring truer. In the middle of it all, you’ll just feel so exhausted and beaten down, you start to question whether you should just take the easy path in life. But have you ever had that moment where after you’ve given your all into something and it ends up a success, you become so elated you feel like you can conquer the world? Yes, that feeling.

Imagine being that blissfully happy and content when you’ve finally become what it is that you’ve always wanted. Well, let me tell you, that can happen. With belief in yourself, the support of your loved ones and these five little reminders of why you should absolutely go after your big dreams, they may just turn into more than just dreams and be your reality.

1. Going for your big dreams challenges you.

Personal growth is something one should aim every day. You don’t want to be in the same place your entire life. Going for your big dreams allow you to learn from failure and success. What does it mean to fail and what can one do about it? Easy, you learn from it and you take it as a challenge to improve and do better next time. You therefore grow in character and in the skills you possess.

2. Going for your big dreams is living a life on fire.

I don’t know about you but I have no intention of living a mediocre life. I want a life lived with intense passion and commitment to the good stuff. The good stuff being the ones that make me excited to wake up in the morning and that’s what your big dreams are right?

3. Going for your big dreams allows you to meet new and interesting people.

There is no goal we can accomplish completely by ourselves. Being the social creatures that we are, we need other people for connection. Going through our path of achieving our big dreams, we will meet people who share the same passion as us on that dream and we should take that as an opportunity to build friendships. There’s nothing more thrilling than being in a coffee shop talking and laughing with like-minded people.

4. Going for your big dreams makes the world a better place.

Does the world really need another ordinary and robotic person who goes with the flow? Wouldn’t the world benefit from an empathetic person who sets up a social enterprise that funds and helps women who are victims of abuse? From another compassionate doctor who occasionally do pro bono surgeries? From an accomplished author who writes with themes of love and connection in society? From a coffee shop owner that offers a space for the community to gather and get connected while providing organic and locally sourced food? Wouldn’t our world be a better place with people who go for their big dreams?

5. Lastly, going for your big dreams inspires others.

So, you’ve finally reached your big dreams, what now? Well, you know what, the journey doesn’t end there. Someday down the road, you don’t know which person has the same big dream as you did and they’re going to look up to you and what you have accomplished. They’re going to want to know how you did it and you’re going to tell them, “Big dreams are hard but you are strong and determined. So you got this and I believe in you.”
