7 Simple, Small Things You Can Do To Make Yourself Feel Better Quick

It’s normal to have days where you’re feeling super down on life, temporarily depressed, or just in a weird mood. It can take a lot of energy to pull yourself up, and usually telling our brain to just “be happy” doesn’t work. However, there are a few smaller scaled things that you can do to boost your mood a bit! Whether you’re upset about a boy, feeling discouraged after not getting hired for your dream job, or just feeling misguided in life, here are 7 small things you can do to make yourself feel better.

1. Beautify yourself.. but to your own standards.

Nails done, hair done, everything did. Pampering yourself never fails to brighten up your mood, even if just for a day. Go get your nails done, go get your hair cut, colored, or even just styled. Do your eyebrows, put on jewelry. Wear an outfit that makes you feel good. You will be confident and it will boost your self-esteem, which helps make you happier. Don’t just do what you think other people want to see though, style and dress yourself how you want. Set your own standards of beauty and rock it.

2. Make Lists!

Lots of lists. For those of you who haven’t found the benefits of writing down a bunch of things and then watching the list shrink right in front of your eyes, you definitely need to try this. I always write lists, for everything. I can write like 10 lists a day, every day, and still want to make more lists.

Nothing is more satisfying than being able to cross something off. Check. Done. Moving on.

It just makes you feel so accomplished and motivated! Make the following lists when you’re feeling down: Write down all of the things that you are worried about/upset over. When one of them ends up working out, or getting solved, cross it off. This will show you that everything will eventually be okay. Write down your wants. Write a list of 20 things that you are thankful for or happy about every day that you are sad. It will make you think hard, and once you are finished, you’ll realize that you have a lot to be happy about! Making lists also makes you feel organized, leaving your mind less cluttered and hopefully easing up on your mood.

3. Catch up with a life-long friend.

Calling all childhood friends, high school friends, old college roommates! When you’re upset about a situation in your life, sometimes the best thing to do is to talk about it with someone who has seen you go through everything. And I mean a friend that has literally been through it all with you. I have a girl who I have been friends with for nine years. Even though we went to different high schools, and only see one another every few months, we still know about every single romance, whether just a little crush/fling/or long-term lover, that we have both had. When we’re in a funk over a boy, our job, our future plans, or any issue at all, we always meet up. This friend has the ability to remind you of your past and show you how far you have come in life They can remind you that you have dealt with crappy situations before and have survived. They will help give you advice based on your past, because they know you. They will help you.

4. Save your money.

Yes, usually I see “Go on a shopping spree!” included in these types of lists, but no. Save your money! I am a shopaholic like most girls, but here I am putting my foot down. Those beautiful pumps will only put a smile on your face in the checkout line and might last until you make it home, but saving your money will make you feel so much better, and for a way longer time. It will make you feel responsible and secure, and less anxious. I mean who doesn’t get happy when looking at their online account and seeing that they actually have more than 50 dollars?

5. Plan a trip, Move, Do something.

Even if it’s a fake trip, just plan something. Give yourself something to look forward to. Whether it’s planning for an upcoming ski weekend or looking at small apartments in the city you want to move to, looking forward to something will bring positive energy into your life. It will give you motivation to stay focused, which will lead to happiness.

6. Read.

Never stop reading. Seriously, the best way to forget about your own problems are to read about someone else’s. Escape your reality and dive into a book. Most of the time you will even find advice on what to do with your not-so-perfect situation! Experiencing someone figure out their issues will give you ideas and inspiration on how to figure out your own.

7. Get to the source.

Do something to fix your problems. Get a new job, let go of someone, forgive yourself. Doing these things may not be that simple, but recognizing the source and taking small steps towards fixing it can be. Don’t just sit around and wallow in sadness. Do something to change it.
