The day they turned my cochlear implant on, I needed to pee in the middle of the programming. So we paused, and I went to the bathroom. It sounded like someone was constantly crumpling a paper bag, nonstop. Later my wife passed gas, and it sounded like a gunshot. Scared the crap out of me. She wasn’t amused by my reaction. A few weeks later my brain finally got all the sounds sorted out properly.
I was deaf from 3-7 as a child. I didn’t realize at the time that I was any different from anyone else. I don’t remember the first thing I heard, but I do remember being very confused as to how everyone in class knew what to do. I just copied off of the other kids; everyone’s drawing a clown, you draw a clown sort of thing. I also got in trouble for screaming a lot.
As an adult my hearing loss has returned and is inoperable (nerve degeneration). I’m half deaf across all tones in both ears. I wear hearing aids and there are times (like today) that I want to rip them out of my ears and throw them across the room. Things are so loud! I’m more comfortable with my deafness then with my hearing.
my wife had meningitis when she was only a couple of months old and she lost 90% hearing of her left year and upto 60% on her right.SHe could hear really low frequencies that normal humans cant hear because of what happened. She wore a hearing aid on her teens and it wasnt very good and about 2 months back we went and go these amazing customized hearing aids. These things are small and nobody can see that she is wearing em and they can alter the programme through plugging it into a pc or through an iphone.Which blew my mind. But when she first put them on,she could hear the sounds of her purse closing and her belt buckle and the sound of feet. The sound of tires on the road. The sound of birds. She was amazed that we could hear so much.Wife had a hard time figuring out which sounds are which because they are so new. IF you have HEARING PROBLEMS GO TO A DOCTOR AND FIND SOMETHING THAT WILL HELP. The small ear things my wife is wearing are amazing. PM me and ill pm the company who does it.
I was born deaf and suddenly regained my hearing a few months later. I was napping and my mom was vacuuming. I started to scream. My mom took me to the doctor and they did the tests, saying that I had gained hearing in both of my ears. My hearing isn’t all that great and I think I need hearing aids. I don’t remember it, (no shit) but the first sound I heard was a vacuum cleaner.
I was born nearly completely deaf but was able to finally get a great hearing device when I was 21. The first thing that really blew my mind was hearing the sound of my own footsteps, hearing that for the first time felt so indescribably real to me. I remember that part the most about it.
Sounds became so crisp, and clear. It was like i was finally a real human, instead of a guy who “ignores” you if you’re talking to him from across the room.
