Anne Hathaway let her Instagram followers know that she’s planning to gain a few pounds for a role. She did this with the hopes of cutting any future fat-shamers off, but it kind of makes you think about how fucked up our culture is that she had to do this at all.
On the post she says “I am gaining weight for a movie role and it is going well. To all the people who are going to fat shame me in the upcoming months, it’s not me, it’s you. Peace xx”
What if she just gained a few pounds and it wasn’t for a role? What if she wasn’t working out in the video she announced this in?
While it seems insane that she had to make the announcement at all, and wrap it in an unsaid promise that she’s still prioritizing her health I don’t blame her. I don’t think the fat-shaming that she’s worried about is a figment of her imagination. We love to talk about women’s bodies. We love to pretend to be concerned about their health so that we feel righteous in gossiping about normal weight fluctuations. It’s a scary world out there.
