5 Simple Ways To Show Yourself Some Love This Valentine’s Day

By

It’s that time of year again. In the midst of dreary snowstorms and spring break dreams, Valentine’s Day manages to sneak in and make Beyoncé’s classic hit a number one again. But whether you partake in heart-shaped piñata smashing or have cozy dinner plans, you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to give the relationships in your life a little TLC. Starting with the most important relationship…the one you have with yourself.

Instead of rolling your eyes or assuming I’m single, ask yourself this: do you treat yourself like you treat your best friend? Or better yet, do you treat yourself like you treat your dog? Okay, now you can roll your eyes because it’s pretty obvious that I’m single.

But for all my fellow singles, here are five (unconventional) ways you can show yourself some love this Valentine’s Day:

1. Make breakfast and eat it in bed.

February 14th is a Sunday, so you have no excuse to not eat a leisurely breakfast. Stay in pajamas, make your favorite gluten-filled pancakes and eat them in bed while watching whatever the hell you want on T.V. Perk of being single: you are in full control of the remote.

2. Treat yourself…for real.

Schedule a massage, or better yet, a full spa retreat. Spend all day in sweats or dress up extra just to walk around Target. Buy that purse you’ve been eyeing for months or get a double heaping of guac because, yes, you are worth the extra cost. Self-care isn’t selfish. So whatever makes you feel on-top-of-the-world, do it. Just don’t blame me for your bank statement.

3. Give yourself some credit.

We are normally our own worst critics, so let today be an exception. Make a conscious effort to acknowledge the things you are proud of. Did you make it to the gym three times last week? Celebrate. You went into Whole Foods and didn’t spend $100? Throw a freaking party. But seriously, big or small, a win is a win.

4. Stay off social media.

You already know what you’re going to find on there: pictures of roses, chocolate, jewelry, three-course dinners and kissing selfies. Social media leads to inevitable comparison, and today of all days, is not a time for that. Plus, a social media detox never hurts. Make this Valentine’s the first of many days that you don’t compare your life to someone else’s highlight reel.

5. Be kind to yourself.

Eliminate negative self-talk and accept where you are…in life, in your career, in your body. There’s no deadline for success or love in your life. You’re doing the best you can at this time, and that is more than enough.
