Having Siblings And What They Mean To Me

By

My siblings are my best friends.

The four of us make up a beautiful combination of support for each other.

I remember growing up and telling mom that I wanted to be an only child. Having siblings running around was ruining my chance of getting the attention that I often took too much of. I hated the way I was always a part of carpools, had to share a room, and don’t even get me started with how much I hated those old hand-me-downs that were years out of style by the time they reached me. I saw how simple being an only child looked and I wanted that badly.

Now, many years later, I cringe at the thought of growing up without my three siblings.

Having siblings has taught me to share. Nothing was ever really mine to keep. Nothing was really anyone’s to keep.

Everything was for everyone. Oh, you got that toy for your birthday? Too bad. Share with your sister. Oh, you had the remote first? Too bad. Pick something that everyone wants to watch. Sure, we probably had numerous fits crying about how unfair that seems, but we learned something significant with every tear: share with the people you love.

Having siblings has taught me loyalty. We all have our bad days and sometimes it is going to take a long time for us to feel okay. There is no better feeling than knowing someone will have your back no matter what your issue is. We all need to lean on each other sometimes; make sure you’re there to catch each other when we fall. Never leave the ones you love.

Having siblings has taught me to apologize. There is no way of getting away from your siblings the day after a big fight, so you need to be able to admit your mistakes. Likewise, you need to be able to forgive. Forgive even when it is hard. Be able to look each other in the eyes and realize that they never meant to hurt you. Always forgive the ones you love.

You three have taught me more than you will ever know. I am so thankful that I was blessed enough to take on this crazy world with you.
