In 1959, Brazilians living in Jaboatão, fed up with how their city was being run, decided to take matters into their own hands.

They went to the polls and elected a goat named Fragrant into office.

Four years later, in São Paulo, a five-year-old rhinoceros named Cacareco (Rubbish, in Portuguese), was elected by the voters. The votes were all legitimate, with one voter going as far as to say, “Better to elect a rhino than an ass.”

The election of Cacareco inspired Canadians to form the Rhinoceros Party of Canada.
