10 Non-Materialistic Things To Look Forward To This Holiday Season

By

Well, it’s officially December, and the holiday season is almost here!
Now that the Black Friday shopping madness has ended, the present shopping continues on, and everyone is waiting for winter break to get here!

There are SO many things to look forward to this holiday season, but so many times we only look at the materialistic side of things and before you know it we are stuck in the idea that material items are all that matters.

Here are 10 things to look forward to about the holiday’s that don’t revolve around material things that will get you in the spirit:

1. Giving to others

The look on your relative or best friend’s face when they open a gift you took time into picking for them or creating. That’s what really matters. When you give, you feel happy inside, because you know you made someone else feel that happiness as well.

2. Christmas cookies and desserts

There’s nothing that’s better than homemade chocolate chip cookies with a glass of milk by the fire anytime during the month of December. You don’t even have to feel guilty about it, because that’s what the holidays are all about!

3. Family

Although they can sometimes get on your nerves, family is the most important thing at the end of the day. Getting to spend quality time with the one’s you love most is valuable.

You will look back and appreciate all those holiday celebrations with your family and be grateful that you got to be surrounded by people who love you during this magical time of the year.

4. Feeling like a little kid again

I love how I still get that feeling of magic and happiness when I get into bed on the night of Christmas Eve. My cousins and I always laugh and talk about how we used to go outside at my Grandmom’s after checking the Santa Tracker on her computer. When we went outside, we were 100% sure we could see Rudolph’s red nose in the sky and rushed our parents to leave to get home in time to get in bed because Santa was on his way!

I always feel like a little kid again during the holiday’s and it’s so nice to relive some of my best childhood memories now that I’m older and wish I could go back to those carefree days.

5. Christmas music

Whether you’re lying or not, I know every single person has once caught themself singing along to a Christmas song when it come’s on the radio. If you say you hate Christmas music, you’re lying. No one can possibly hate Christmas music during the holidays, unless they’re the Grinch themself!

Admit it: There is nothing like singing along to Mariah Carey while decorating the Christmas Tree.

6. Decorations

I love snuggling up on my couch with all the Christmas lights on and the tree beautifully lit.
December is my favorite month because of this. Driving around and seeing the first house in the neighborhood lit up with Christmas lights just gives you that happy feeling inside knowing the holiday season is approaching!

I couldn’t help but have a huge smile on my face when I drove past my first neighbor’s house lit up with lights on my way home from work.
It’s the little things that mean the most.

7. Traditions

Whether it’s a holiday party that you go to every year, attending the Christmas Eve service at your church, or leaving out cookies for Santa, traditions are important. When I was little, I used to run around outside with my brother sprinkling homemade reindeer food so Dasher and Dancer wouldn’t get hungry when they stopped at my house.

After that, I’d go inside and leave Santa a note thanking him for all the gift’s I knew I would be opening the next day. I always got the sweetest note back from Santa the next day, and I was always blown away that Santa actually took the time to answer MYletter. (Thanks, Dad.)
The memories I have from that are amazing and always make me smile. Whether or not you continue on with traditions you have, reminiscing on them is equally as sweet.

8. Snow! (Maybe)

Depending on where you live you may or may not be getting snow this holiday season!
The possibility of having a white Christmas is always so exciting because each year you never know what will happen!

If you’re lucky enough to get snow on Christmas, the feeling of joy that come’s with it is indescribable.

9. Christmas movies

With a mug of hot chocolate in hand, and your favorite blanket around you, enjoying Christmas movies in December is the greatest thing ever. There’s just something about watching a classic Christmas movie or cute Lifetime Christmas story that get’s you in the Christmas spirit quickly.
That’s something I look forward to each and every year.

10. EGGNOG!

Last, but certainly not least, it wouldn’t be the holidays without a glass of eggnog in grandmom’s kitchen on Christmas Eve.

As nice as it is to receive gifts, there are so many more reasons to be excited about this time of year.

We have so much to look forward to!
