This Is What Your Heartbreak Will Teach You About Moving On

By

It almost doesn’t feel real at first.

In a matter of seconds, it seems to change from the comfort and security of being wrapped up in his arms, to the day your world comes crashing down around you as he explains he just doesn’t love you as much as he used to. And it hurts. It hurts for days, months and perhaps years but I am looking forward to the day when I wake up and just don’t feel the pain of missing him anymore. You can waste your time thinking of a million ways that you could have done things differently- changed the past, and re-written the present. But all those fantasies change absolutely nothing. He is no longer your person and you just have to accept that harsh reality in order to move on and embrace a future without him.

You let yourself move on when you acknowledge the fact that he chose to leave you. He chose not to love you anymore. Love is many things but it should never be one sided.

The truth about heartbreak is that it’s a chance to reinvent yourself.

Do not let this make you bitter. Let heartbreak give you the opportunity to become a better version of yourself. Because if all you are doing is trying to forget him and everything that once was your relationship, then you aren’t acknowledging what you learned during your time with him. So be grateful for all the memories and the person you became because of him.

The truth about moving on is that it doesn’t happen overnight, but I can promise you it does happen eventually. There is no clear cut formula to getting over someone, you just wake up one morning and he doesn’t cross your mind and when a mutual friend mentions his name, you don’t feel your heart drop to your stomach. And in that moment you should be proud of yourself. It doesn’t matter how you picked up the pieces he left broken after his departure, just that you did. Because now your heart is a bit more open and believe me darling, it is ready to love again.

The thing is, we all tend to only remember and focus on all the positive aspects when a relationship ends.

We don’t think about the moments when he might have made you feel like less of a person, the little fights, the nights you went home crying or even questioning if you still wanted to be in this relationship. You remember the nights he rang your doorbell with flowers in his hands and the nights you drove around aimlessly sharing secrets and you swore you never felt this understood, loved or safe in your entire life.

However, the truth is, you will feel like that again and with someone new.

Just because he is your first love does not mean he is your best love or only love. You will meet new people who make your heart race and leave you going home with hope and excitement. So just remember that old saying that when one door closes, another one opens.
